Heat 1/2 cup of olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat.
Add 1 large minced onion and 3 minced garlic cloves to the saucepan. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 5 to 7 minutes.
Reduce heat to medium-low.
Add 4 cups of water, 2 cans of crushed diced tomatoes, 1 can of tomato paste, 1/4 cup of chopped basil, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of white sugar to the saucepan.
Season the mixture with ground salt and black pepper to taste.
Stir the mixture, bring it to a simmer, and cook until the sauce is thickened, about 2 hours.
